Declaration of Fair Tournament Rules
To formulate the formal features, which the fair tournament rules for this game must correspond to,
two most crucial factors will be taken into account:
- equality of start conditions for both players during the match and
- time factor, which is very important for tournament organizers.
So what are these requirements?
The following regulations should be conformed to these requirements:
1. Equal number of starts (opening rolls) for each side.
2. Equal number of matches for all participants of a tournament.
3. Fair scoring system for a game and a match
It may seem strange, but indeed, the consequent observance of these simple (at first sight) regulations leads to striking changes in the tactics and strategy of this game.
Especially these regulations are the corner stones, around which the whole system of tournament play must be built.
Equal Number of Starts For Each Side
Equal number of starts for each side automatically means:
· even number of games in a match;
· equality of opportunities for each side according to the right of the first move.
In principle, there are several possibilities to realize this last suggestion (s. “Fair Backgammon Tournament Rules” book), but we apply the optimal – that is
The Identical Opening Roll Rule
The right of the first move and the roll are chosen only in every odd game (1, 3, 5 etc.). In each even game the right of the first move and the identical opening roll are simply passed over to the opponent.
Advantages:
· The right of the first move and the roll's value are determined only once in two games;
· Each of the player's sides is totally balanced with regard to the number of starts as well as to the dice combinations of the opening roll, that corresponds intuitively and logically especially to the tournament play.
Disadvantages:
· None
